ASTM A847
What Is ASTM A847 Steel?
ASTM A847 is a weathering steel that’s a high strength low alloy steel covering cold-formed welded square and rectangular tubing and pipe. The atmospheric corrosion resistance of this steel in most environments is substantially better than carbon steel with or without copper addition.
ASTM A847 is intended for welded, bolted or riveted construction of bridges and other structures where high strength and enhanced corrosion resistance are required. ASTM A847 has a 50ksi minimum yield strength and a 70ksi minimum tensile strength.
It’s cold formed and welded to insure chemical consistency throughout the entire tube surface. No outside metal is added during the welding process. The cold forming process enhances the physical properties with a 50ksi minimum yield strength and a 70ksi minimum tensile strength.
This specification is specifically designed for use in structural applications where weight reduction and enhanced corrosion resistance are important. ASTM A847 is specifically designed for structures that require welding and bolting. It is the only choice where high strength and enhanced corrosion resistance are required.
ASTM A847 steel tubing is commonly referred to as "Weathering Steel" due to its ability to develop a stable oxide layer on its surface, which provides protection against atmospheric corrosion. It is similar to ASTM A588 and ASTM A606 Type 4 steels in terms of corrosion resistance and weathering characteristics.
